Homework in Kindergarten?

Yep. Homework in kindergarten. Gavin is half way through his kindergarten year and homework is getting tougher and Gavin HATES it. Math, he loves. He could do it all day long. Reading, not so much. Blending words seems to be giving him the most trouble. Sight words are ok, but he struggles with new words and instead of trying, he gets frustrated and we usually end up in a meltdown. They will soon begin spelling tests and he will fall even further behind because he is struggling with everything else that involves reading and writing. He know the letters. He know the sounds they make. But when it comes to blending them together to form a word, he just can't get it. But, we'll keep on keepin' on and hopefully, one day it will just "click."

Hey Leah, have you tried getting him to use his whole body when blending the words? I don't know if I can explain it in writing but I will try. I am just going to use the simple word "CAT." He would touch his head for the "C," shoulders for the "A," and hips for the "T." It may seem a little silly, but when he goes to take the test he may remember standing and practicing each word and make the connection between the motions and the way he practiced spelling that word. I am not sure if this will help, but it may be worth a try. Love and miss you all!
