Multiples and More: Birth Order

As parents of multiples, it's sometimes hard to avoid comparing your kids; there's "the quiet one", the "bold one", the "bossy one", etc. Stereotyping and pigeonholing aside, we thought it would be interesting to see what kind of trends, if any, we can find relating to birth order and multiples. This week's question of the week is:

Describe your childrens' personalities, in birth order. Do you think your kids personalities are related to their birth order?

Baby A is Kami. She's very inquisitive and wants to know what everyone is doing all around her. She can be serious, as it's just recently she would smile at random people, she used to just stare at people she didn't know who would talk to her. She has a major temper. If she doesn't get her way she screams!

Baby B is Luke. He is the very opposite of Kami. He is happy go lucky, loves to kiss on his sister (who usually rejects these kisses) and will give anybody a big grin! He does have a bit of a temper, but he wears his heart on his shoulder and gets his feelings hurt really easily.

A common link between them is their stubborness. They have a determination to do something, even if you tell them not to, which usually gets them in trouble!

■Is your baby A any bolder or more dominant than B, C, D? No, I don't think one is more dominant than the other. They both have their ways of getting what they want!
■Does your last-born reach milestones last as well? Actually no. He was the last to sit up, crawl, walk, etc. But, he has a large head (extra large!) and so balance was a problem for him.
■Are there any characteristics that you feel are somehow related to birth order? No, I dont' think so.
■Do you find that a lot of people like to "classify" your kids? How do you feel about it? I don't know. Random people rarely know they are twins. We often get asked if they are triplets (with their big brother Gavin) or people just think they are 3 kids really close in age, because Luke is so much bigger than Kami (he's almost as big as Gavin, hence the triplet questions.) Family and Friends refer to them as Kami and Luke, or the babies, but they rarely get referred to as 'the twins.' Which wouldn't bother me, since they are twins! I think I classify them. I can't do something with one of them with out doing the same thing with the other. Like, they get baths at the same time, they eat at the same time, they sleep at the same time. They do everything together. I don't do this with Gavin. But, I guess he's a little older and can tell me when he's hungry and when he's sleepy, etc.

I wonder whether people will refer to them as "the twins" more as they enter school! My kids are in daycare, and they are frequently referred to as "the twins" both at school and among their friends in our neighbourhood.

This is less true in our family, since there are two other sets of twins, but we do refer to my husband's triplet cousins as "the triplets" frequently, since there's only one set.
